WHY DO I NEED AN MC NUMBER

If you run a business that transports people or goods and gets paid for it, you'll likely need something called an MC number. It's kind of like getting permission to operate across different states or countries. Also, if you're in the trucking, bus, or freight business, having an MC number is a must to follow the rules set by the FMCSA. This number helps keep track of how safe your operations are.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DOT NUMBER AND A CARRIER NUMBER

 DOT Number:

  • A DOT number is issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

  • It is primarily used to identify vehicles engaged in interstate commerce that meet certain criteria, such as having a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or a combined weight rating (GCWR) above a specified threshold, carrying hazardous materials, or transporting passengers.

  • DOT numbers are required for commercial vehicles that operate interstate, and in some cases, intrastate, depending on state regulations.

  • The DOT number helps authorities track safety records, conduct inspections, and enforce regulations related to vehicle safety.

Motor Carrier Number (MC Number):

  • A carrier number, also known as an MC number (Motor Carrier number), is issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which is a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

  • It is specifically for businesses or individuals involved in interstate commerce and engaged in the transportation of passengers or cargo for hire.

  • The MC number is used to identify carriers operating in interstate commerce and is required for motor carriers, freight forwarders, and brokers.

  • It is essential for carriers to have an MC number to operate legally and comply with federal regulations governing interstate transportation.

  • Unlike DOT numbers, MC numbers are not required for all commercial vehicles but specifically for those involved in transporting goods or passengers across state lines for compensation.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET THE MC NUMBER?

Mailing letters

Generally takes around 20 to 25 business days from the day when the BOC-3 and the insurance become active for the MC number to be processed and activated in the system. After this period, the authority letter arrives by mail at the address provided on the application.
