What is IFTA?

The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement among the 48 contiguous United States and 10 Canadian provinces aimed at simplifying the fuel tax reporting and collection process for motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions.

Under IFTA, motor carriers are required to file a single fuel tax return in their base jurisdiction, typically where they have their principal place of business. This return includes information on miles traveled and fuel purchased and consumed in each jurisdiction where operations occurred during the reporting period.

The primary goal of IFTA is to streamline administrative processes for motor carriers operating in multiple jurisdictions, reducing the burden of compliance and ensuring fair distribution of fuel tax revenue among participating jurisdictions.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

Non-compliance with IFTA regulations can result in various negative consequences for commercial vehicle operators. Some of the common consequences of non-compliance include:

Fines and Penalties: Commercial vehicle operators who fail to meet IFTA obligations may face significant fines for inaccurate or late filings, as well as additional penalties for continued non-compliance.

License Suspension: In severe cases of repeated non-compliance, states may choose to suspend or revoke the operator's IFTA license, which can result in the inability to legally operate in multiple jurisdictions.

Audits and Record Review: Commercial vehicle operators who fail to comply with IFTA regulations may be subject to audits by state or provincial tax authorities. During these audits, travel records and fuel tax reports will be reviewed to verify accuracy and compliance with IFTA regulations.
